What are inlays and onlays?

A laboratory creates an inlay outside of the mouth to cover a large cavity in a tooth. On the rear of the tooth, tooth-coloured porcelain, composite, or gold may be used to restore strong bites.

After the tooth has been cleared of decay and damage, an impression is obtained. This document documents the structure of the tooth being repaired and the surrounding teeth. A temporary inlay will be inserted to protect the tooth while the permanent inlay is fabricated in the laboratory. On the subsequent visit, the inlay will be bonded to the tooth and, if necessary, minor bite adjustments will be made.

Onlays are placed on teeth to strengthen their shape. The onlay is created in the same manner as the inlay.
