One of the primary responsibilities of a dental hygienist is to perform a procedure known as a "scale and polish" in order to eliminate any accumulation of plaque and tartar. Plaque is the adhesive layer that accumulates on our teeth daily and has the potential to harbour pathogenic bacteria. If permitted to accumulate, dental plaque can undergo mineralization and transform into tartar, which can contribute to the susceptibility of the teeth due to its rough texture that facilitates further plaque accumulation. If dental calculus accumulates at the gingival margin, it may lead to the onset of gingivitis, an initial phase of periodontal disease characterised by inflammation of the gingival tissues. If left untreated, this condition may progress to a more severe form of periodontal disease, ultimately resulting in tooth loss.

During a dental procedure known as a 'scale and polish', a dental hygienist employs specifically designed instruments to eliminate tartar from the surface of the teeth and below the gum line. After completing the cleaning process on all surfaces, the teeth are then polished to achieve a smooth and silky texture. In cases where gum disease has advanced beyond the initial stages, a dental hygienist has the ability to eliminate tartar from the root surface, thereby promoting a smoother area and diminishing inflammation of the gum tissue. This procedure is commonly referred to as root planing or debridement. It entails a thorough cleaning beneath the gum line and may necessitate the use of an anaesthetic to alleviate any potential discomfort.
