One of the primary responsibilities of a dental hygienist is to perform a procedure known as a "scale and polish" in order to eliminate any accumulation of plaque and tartar. Plaque is the adhesive layer that accumulates on our teeth daily and has the potential to harbour pathogenic bacteria. If permitted to accumulate, dental plaque can undergo mineralization and transform into tartar, which can contribute to the susceptibility of the teeth due to its rough texture that facilitates further plaque accumulation. If dental calculus accumulates at the gingival margin, it may lead to the onset of gingivitis, an initial phase of periodontal disease characterised by inflammation of the gingival tissues.
