How do dentures work?

Full or partial removable dentures are dental prosthetics used to replace one or more missing natural teeth. They can be composed of acrylic plastic, nylon, or metal. In comparison to surgical options like dental implants or the use of a dental bridge, this prosthodontic procedure is less intrusive.

Because they are attached to the gums with a precise fit and, if necessary, dental sealant, full dentures require the support of healthy gums. A partial denture is a scaled-down version of a complete denture that is intended to be clipped onto nearby healthy teeth to fill up the space left by lost teeth.

Who should use dentures?

Partial or full dentures may be recommended for dental patients who want to replace one or more missing teeth due to accident or tooth decay, or who want to replace all of their upper and lower teeth.

If you have lost many teeth but still have healthy gums, a few healthy teeth that don't show any signs of periodontitis or gum disease, and a strong jawbone—all of which are necessary for supporting the application of snug-fitting full or partial dentures in the mouth—you may be thinking about getting dentures.

Due to years of wear and advancing gum disease, tooth loss has often proven unavoidable in older individuals. This does not preclude young people from getting dentures, though. Although not as prevalent, dentures for young people are still an option, especially for those who may have lost teeth in accidents or through contact sports. Young adults who regularly engage in contact sports like rugby or boxing may be advised by our dentists to have dentures instead of dental implants so as to prevent needing additional dental care each time a tooth or implant is knocked out!
