How are the muscles affected?

If your jaw is in the incorrect position, the muscles that move it will have to work much harder and may become fatigued and spasm. The primary symptoms are chronic headaches or migraines, particularly in the morning, discomfort behind the eyes, sinus, and neck and shoulder pain. Occasionally, even the back muscles are implicated.

Is this a dental issue?

A significant number of cases involving headaches, muscle spasms, and jaw discomfort are caused by dental issues. If your teeth don't fit together properly, are severely worn, your crowns are continually breaking, you have ringing in your ears, and you have trouble opening and closing your mouth, you may have TMJ problems.

The medical and dental communities are becoming increasingly aware of the intricate relationship between correct bite and the jaw joint's muscles and nerves. For complete harmony, comfort, and stability, the chewing system requires a delicate equilibrium.

Medicine and dentistry have neglected the Temporomandibular Joint as a potential source of problems for patients with facial pain and migraines for a considerable amount of time. The vast majority of these patients can be treated by dentists with advanced training in TMJ disorders, thanks to modern technology and increased knowledge. By addressing the source of the imbalance, a wide spectrum of dental treatments can provide immediate relief..

How can I identify occlusal (bite) issues?

Are you aware that you grind or grip your teeth?

Do you awaken in the morning with an awareness of your teeth or mandible, as if you had clenched or ground them while you slept?

Do you suffer from persistent migraines or head, neck, and shoulder pain?

Do you experience recurring distress or pain on the side of your face near your ears or jaw joints?

Have you ever experienced clicking, popping, or difficulty moving your mandible joints?

Are there missing teeth in the rear of your mouth? This may result in an unbalanced bite.

The symptoms are sometimes referred to collectively as the TMJ Syndrome.

What does the therapy entail?

We will evaluate your condition by collecting a thorough medical history. Then, we will examine your dentition, locate the initial point of contact between your teeth, and search for signs of teeth grinding or clenching. A set of models will be analysed on an articulator to simulate the TMJ's function.

If the discomfort is severe, a Jig will be placed on the front teeth to separate the way the back teeth are bitten.

Once relief is achieved, a plastic appliance will be fitted so that when you bite on it, all of your teeth will meet at the same moment in a relaxed position for your muscles. If the problem is more complex, we will recommend a treatment plan to resolve it.
