What is the dentist looking for when examining my teeth?
During a routine dental examination, the dentist forms a diagnosis of your health in relation to your head and neck (extra-oral), all areas within your mouth (intra-oral), lymph nodes, soft tissues, Temporomandibular joint, facial and chewing muscles, and any abnormalities of exposed skin or soft tissue. This is in addition to examining the condition of your gums, the health of your tooth structure, and your restorations for decay and wear.
Cancer can develop in any area of the mouth, including the tongue, lips, and pharynx. Unfortunately, oral cancer has a high mortality rate. This is because of tardy detection. The good news is that a "precancer" can sometimes form years before cancer, and if detected early, it has an excellent chance of being prevented or cured if treated quickly. Among the earliest signs of oral cancer are:
- A persistent ulcer or sore pharynx for more than three weeks
- A white or red patch on the mouth's soft tissues, gums, tongue, or lining.
- A persistent sore larynx or hoarse voice for longer than six weeks.
- Swallowing difficulty or a persistent sensation that something is stuck in the throat.
- A neck enlargement lasting longer than three weeks.
- Numbness of the tongue and/or other oral regions
- This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it does include some of the more prevalent symptoms.

I'm quite a nervous patient but she had me completely at ease for my treatment this morning. Also highly recommend for children - her and the nurses were fantastic with my son and his teddy Justin Beaver!
